Apart from the Abbey Church of Eberbach the Romanesque St Ägidius Basilica (Basilika St. Ägidius) in the district of Mittelheim is considered to be the oldest church in the Rheingau.
The churchs history is extremely interesting. It had an Ottonian previous church, i.e. the foundations of the churchs southern side stand on the remnants of a construction from the 10th century. In the 12th century the church was build in the Romanesque style, afterwards changed in the Gothic style, finally furnished in the baroque style and eventually renovated in its original style in the 20th century. The original abbey church was used since 1263 at the latest by the Mittelheim parish as a church but it was only in the middle of the 14th century that the church also got its own priest. The Romanesque building has lasted over the centuries with only minor changes.
