Niederwald Monument Rüdesheim/Rhine
The world-famous Niederwarld Monument (Niederwalddenkmal Rüdesheim am Rhein) was erected in 1877 - 1883 after the draft by Johann Schilling from Dresden. The 38 m tall monument is regarded as a German national monument and symbolises the re-establishment of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The main figure is the Germania holding the imperial crown in her raised right hand and the imperial sword in her left hand. The heights of the Niederwald can be reached from Rüdesheim/Rhine and Assmannshausen by a cabin railway and/or a chairlift. The beautiful view from the monument reaches far beyond the inland of Rhineland Palatinate.
