A particularly nice way to approach Rüdesheim is aboard the white ships travelling along the Rhine River past 1000-year-old Brömserburg Castle, the oldest castle located directly beside the Middle Rhine and the Ruins of Ehrenfels Castle situated amidst vineyards high above the Rhine which bears witness to a varied history at the gate to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The landing stage at the promenade of Rüdesheim is only a stones throw away from the narrow streets of the historic centre, where visitors can explore authentic Straußwirtschaften, unusual restaurants, small wine-growing estates, lovingly restored half-timbered houses and magnificent noble courts.
Amid homely wine restaurants and taverns the Drosselgasse is the heart of Rhenish cheerfulness with live music and dancing in traditional wine taverns and courtyards accented by lush vines and illuminated wine taverns.
A special and varied museum landscape is provided by the unique exhibition of self-playing musical intruments (Siegfried´s Mechanical Musical Cabinet), instruments of torture in the cellar vaults (Medieval Torture Museum), toys (Toy Museum) the Railway Museum, the Rheingau Wine Museum and the Asbach Visitor Centre, which shows the production of the world-famous brandy from Rüdesheim.
What would Rüdesheim be without the Niederwald Monument? The chairlift is the most comfortable way to reach the powerful Germania, commemorating the Empires Unification of 1871 in peaceful posture holding a lowered sword. Emperor Wilhelm II inaugurated the Monument himself. The breathtaking view overlooking the valleys of the Rhine and the Nahe as well as the famous vineyard sites of Rüdesheim are well worth visiting. The monument is surrounded by the Niederwald, a landscape park established by the Count of Ostein at the end of the 18th century with temples, magic cave, knights hall and ruins of castles at the most beautiful viewpoints.
The towns varied calendar of events through the year is replete with festivals and markets, concerts and cultural highlights: from Rhine in Flames (Rhein in Flammen), to the Wine Festival of Rüdesheim on the romantic market place to the big motorcycle event Magic Bike Rüdesheim, one of Europes largest Harley Davidson Meetings.
The Tage des Federweißen (New wines days) are a small fine festival celebrating the young wine. In December Christmas scents hover through Rüdesheims historic centre on the occasion of the Christmas Market of Nations.
