This basilica unites Gothic spirit and style to form a total art work for all the senses, because visitors to Kiedrich can both see and hear pure Gothic style. Kiedrich’s choirboys perform a Latin high mass in Gothic-Germanic dialect, the Mainz version of the Gregorian chant, on the second, third and fourth Sunday of the month. The organ is Germany’s oldest working specimen with almost 1,000 pipes tuned in just intonation. Built around 1330 to 1380 and expanded from 1460 to 1493, St Valentine’s was elevated to a minor basilica by the Pope in 2010. Its fixtures reflect its history from 1330 to the 21st century. Neighbouring St Michael’s Chapel from 1444, also known as ‘the Sainte Chapelle of Rheingau’, is considered to be a jewel of the late-Gothic period.
