Wine from the Rheingau

Welcome to the Rheingau, one of 13 official German wine-growing regions — the ‘small’ home of big-tasting rieslings, thanks to our well-balanced #coolclimate. Our mild climate and the minerals in the Rheingau’s soil offer ideal conditions for viticulture. The sunny slopes of the Rheingau are covered in a multitude of vineyards. These vineyards are planted with over 3,211 hectares of grape vines, in particular Riesling grapes, which grow on 2,500 hectares of land, and pinot noir grapes — Assmannshausen is very well known for these. For a few years now, wines with the labels ‘Erstes Gewächs’ (first growth) and Rhg Grosses Gewächs® (classic) reflect the fact that our vintners are always striving to fill their bottles with new and extraordinary wines.

Decide for yourself how you want to explore the Rheingau and its wines: wine hikes and tours help you to explore how wine, and Riesling in particular, has shaped this region. The wineries you visit may seem imposing, as they are housed behind palace and abbey walls, but they will welcome you with open arms. Comfortable wine taverns invite you to relax in the vintner’s ‘best rooms’. Of course there are also a multitude of restaurants, bars and wine shops, not to mention the oldest winery in Germany, that are well worth a visit.
