The historic lime kilns on the country road between Flörsheim and Hochheim are unique in Hesse: There are no other kilns in our state as well preserved as these. As an industrial monument, the lime kilns represent both a piece of craft history and local history.

The massive circular structures are impressive witnesses from pre-industrial times. Their history dates back to the 18th century when the lime kilns belonged to a local brickworks. This industrially significant facility provided the foundation for the lime plaster of many Flörsheim houses. However, the history of the limestone industry at this site likely goes back even further. Presumably, the Romans were already extracting and burning limestone here.

Lime burning was always a laborious business in the past. Burned lime is an extremely important building material. Before the onset of industrial processing at the beginning of the 20th century, lime was generally produced by family-run businesses. The raw material was poured in from above through the filling openings. The walkable roof structure made of glass and steel over the exposed facility provides an exact view that the lime burners had at the time when filling and emptying.

To keep the kiln running, family members took turns loading it day and night. The Flörsheim lime kilns were fired until 1921. Then the Martinis, the last family to perform this grueling job, ceased operation. The massive masonry ensemble remained in a sleeping beauty slumber for three-quarters of a century. From 1997 to 1998, the Regionalpark RheinMain GmbH uncovered and preserved the ruins. Today, they are marked as a monument and can be visited.
