From the Platte stop, we take the downhill path to the underpass of the B417. Here we continue our circular route on the long-distance trail E3 and quickly reach a viewpoint with a seating area to the left of the trail in the Rentmauer forest area. This short detour is worth it, as it offers an excellent view over Wiesbaden, Mainz, Rheinhessen, and the Rhine-Main area up to the Odenwald. Returning from the viewpoint, we continue straight on the E3 for about 600 m until it turns sharply right. Further on, we cross the Kesselbachweg and come directly to Herzogsweg, also called Rheinhöhenweg. We turn left there and reach the Herzogshütte, located at the entrance to the Eschbachtal. We leave the Rheinhöhenweg about 300 m after Herzogshütte and continue on the E3 towards Eiserne Hand. Passing the Haus Hubertus (a former signal barracks from WWII), we reach the track infrastructure of the Nassauische Touristik-Bahn (NTB). The NTB is now a museum railway. Its operating route was declared a monument by the state of Hesse in 1987 and is Hesse's longest monument. We cross the tracks and reach Eiserne Hand, named after an old signpost, at 423 m above sea level. We turn left, staying on the E3, go under the B54 road underpass, and arrive at Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße, which we follow to the first right turn. Here, we leave the E3 and switch to a forest path marked with a red dot, running parallel to Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße. After about 2 km, we reach Schläferskopf at 454 m above sea level. On the Schläferskopf is a restaurant with a viewing terrace and a 31 m high basalt lava observation tower, the so-called ‚Kaiser-Wilhelm-Tower’, which unfortunately is no longer accessible and therefore closed. Now there is the option to make a circular walk around Schläferskopf or go back about 325 m on the previous hiking path. In both cases, you reach the former spa path no. 8, which branches off from Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße and continuously descends to the pheasantry. This route is marked only with the NaturFreunde sign up to the Pagenstecher Hut. Along this route, we cross the NTB tracks a second time and arrive at the Pagenstecher Hut, named after the founder of the eye clinic in Wiesbaden in 1856. From there, we walk downhill on the Schützenhausweg toward the pheasantry and see at the forest edge the representative portals of the Schläferskopf and Kreuzstollen with the Wiesbaden city coat of arms. These are the entrances to the kilometers-long deep tunnels where, since the early 20th century, the best drinking water for Wiesbaden's supply has been extracted through mining water tapping from the water-bearing Taunus quartzite. A signboard provides information about the water supply from the Taunus. On the left side of the path is a spring fountain popular due to its good water quality with the public. Then we come to the Klosterbruch pumping station with drinking water tank and deacidification facility. On clear days, the Schützenhausweg offers a beautiful view of Wiesbaden and the surrounding area. Also on the left side of the path stands the New Shooting House with its shooting range, and we reach the plant and animal park Fasanerie, the current destination of the fourth stage.
