Dickschieder Wildwechsel

The Dickschieder Wildwechsel is for hikers who are not afraid of steep ascents and descents. They are richly rewarded for their efforts. Deeply incised side valleys and magnificent views make the hiking experience on this challenging path unforgettable. Roe deer, wild boars, and especially deer are not uncommon on this trail. With some luck, you can even spot mouflon on exposed rock ledges like the Spitzlei.

What a panorama at the start – and what an elevation profile afterward! How nice that it initially goes downhill through meadows. Shortly after, you reach one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Wisper valley, the "Dickschieder Window".

Then, listen carefully, because you go through diverse forest where wildlife likes to stay. During the rutting season, the stags' roaring is omnipresent.

After leaving the forest, you reach the 445 m high Atzmann. Here you could interrupt the hike. Those who continue will be rewarded less than 100 meters later at the "Twin Benches" with a magnificent view.

From here, the path leads deep down into the Mehrbach valley. You cross the stream on stepping stones, and shortly after, the "Wisperthron" awaits along the way. Behind the elevated resting bench, slanted slate slabs testify to the forces that have folded the terrain for millennia.

After the rest, the hike gently ascends to a junction in the forest. Here begins the liveliest part of the hike: the slate rocks of the "Spitzlei." "Lei" stands for rock; the Loreley comes to mind. The path between stunted oaks and pines is one of the most beautiful sections of the Dickschieder Wildwechsel, wild romantic!

Soon after, the lowest point of the hike is reached in the secluded and dreamy Herzbach valley. On the following ascent, you can calmly take your time – it stretches long up to the "Erich-Fischer-Bench," a well-deserved resting spot. From there, you stroll leisurely through meadows to the outskirts of Hilgenroth.

Across meadows, you go down again to the Mehrbach. And again, you have to balance over stepping stones. Beyond, the path rises steeply one last time. Soon Dickschied is reached, and magnificent distant views reward the effort at the end.
