As already expected last year, visitors to the service in Eltville on Sunday, October 11 will experience a very special musical highlight: The ensemble "Waldecho" (parforce horn group under the direction of Helmuth Fintl) will perform the Hubertus Mass by Jules Cantin in a version for horns and organ.

Since the renovated historic organ of the Evang. Christuskirche harmonizes musically with the hunting horns in a very special way, this mass will be repeated at the same location this year.

The tradition of the Hubertus Mass for parforce horns developed in the 19th century in France and Belgium from orally transmitted melodies. Well-known fanfares (Hubertus fanfares by Dampierre) and new compositions were compiled into liturgical music. By the end of the 19th century, the Hubertus Mass was included in the collections of Normand, Sombrun, and de la Porte. New editions based on these old publications appeared after World War I. The most famous edition is that of Jules Cantin from 1934. This version will be presented in its original form. The work is characterized by the presence of central liturgical music pieces.

The special timbre of the valve-less hunting horns gives this music a distinctive acoustic character.

The service will be held by Pastor i.R. Ralf-Andreas Gmelin, and the organ will be played by Andreas Karthäuser.

Mill Trail in the Elsterbach Valley

The Rheingau is crisscrossed by numerous streams that wind from the Taunus towards the Rhine and once powered many waterwheels. Along the small Elsterbach alone, which springs north of Stephanshausen and flows into the Rhine at Winkel, 18 mills once did their work. Thirteen of these are connected by the Mill Trail in the Elsterbach valley. Mills have always had a mystical aura, playing a role in many fairy tales and legends. However, they also had the very unromantic task of providing people with food and clothing and were drivers of economic development. Since autumn 2022, the Mill Hiking Trail is signposted as a circular route (12.1 kilometers) from the starting point at the Bartolomä inn in Winkel (Main Street). It follows the Elsterbach with its former mills up to Marienthal Monastery, then leads through forest and vineyards back to the starting point. Along the way, old millstones decorate the entrances to the former mills, and information boards provide historical background. Those who wish can divide the large loop into two shorter loops: The Vineyard Loop (4.8 kilometers) leads from Winkel along the Elsterbach valley to Johannisberg and back through the vineyards to the starting point; its logo is complemented by a Riesling-yellow dot. The Forest Loop (7.3 kilometers, additional green dot marking) runs from Johannisberg in the Elsterbach valley to Marienthal Monastery and back through forest and vineyards to Johannisberg.
