Assmannshausen Höllenberg – Location of World Renown
On the south-facing slopes, almost exclusively Pinot Noir is cultivated. The success story of Pinot Noir in the Rheingau begins with the Cistercian monks. They came from Burgundy to the Rheingau and founded Eberbach Abbey. They already appreciated the unique location of the Assmannshausen Höllenberg. The name-givers are the steep slate slopes. The name is derived from Halde (slope) and has nothing to do with "hell".
The meadows at Klosterwald bear witness to the Rheingau monastic culture. Not far from here was the former Cistercian nunnery of Marienhausen, subordinate to Eberbach Abbey. Today, the Marienkirche on the grounds of the St. Vincenzstift in Aulhausen can still be visited.
