Nordic Christmas: Choral Music for the 3rd Advent with Cantemus Rheingau!

When the days grow shorter and the nights longer during Advent, the longing for security, warmth, and light increases. In the Nordic tradition, festivals of light such as the Lucia Festival or the Yule Festival at the winter solstice have always provided a counterpoint to the darkness. Cantemus Rheingau musically embraces this tradition and invites you to Nordic-Christmas choral music in the Johanneskirche Erbach on Saturday of the third Advent weekend, December 12, at 5:00 p.m.

Under the direction of Manuel Pschorn, classic Scandinavian Christmas songs as well as reflective, Nordic-influenced works by contemporary composers such as Ola Gjeilo, Eric Whitacre, and John Rutter will resonate. To set the mood for the upcoming Christmas celebration, the music forms a sonorous arc from quiet reflection to joyful anticipation, from winter darkness to Christmas light.

Take a moment to pause, let the sounds of Cantemus Rheingau touch you, and take a little light, warmth, and hope with you into the Advent season.

Entry is free; donations are welcome.

Mill Trail in the Elsterbach Valley

easy

The Rheingau is crisscrossed by numerous streams that wind from the Taunus towards the Rhine and once powered many waterwheels. Along the small Elsterbach alone, which springs north of Stephanshausen and flows into the Rhine at Winkel, 18 mills once did their work. Thirteen of these are connected by the Mill Trail in the Elsterbach valley. Mills have always had a mystical aura, playing a role in many fairy tales and legends. However, they also had the very unromantic task of providing people with food and clothing and were drivers of economic development. Since autumn 2022, the Mill Hiking Trail is signposted as a circular route (12.1 kilometers) from the starting point at the Bartolomä inn in Winkel (Main Street). It follows the Elsterbach with its former mills up to Marienthal Monastery, then leads through forest and vineyards back to the starting point. Along the way, old millstones decorate the entrances to the former mills, and information boards provide historical background. Those who wish can divide the large loop into two shorter loops: The Vineyard Loop (4.8 kilometers) leads from Winkel along the Elsterbach valley to Johannisberg and back through the vineyards to the starting point; its logo is complemented by a Riesling-yellow dot. The Forest Loop (7.3 kilometers, additional green dot marking) runs from Johannisberg in the Elsterbach valley to Marienthal Monastery and back through forest and vineyards to Johannisberg. Both loops can be easily linked at the Kloster Johannisberg hotel. Mill Hiking Trail Flyer
