The hike ideally starts at the hiking car park of the Grillhütte Rauenthal. From here, the path leads over a meadow westward to the Rheinsteig, which is reached shortly after. Rauenthaler Spange and Rheinsteig run parallel for some time. After a short forest section, a large clearing is crossed. Apple trees line the path on both sides. The “Max-Bank” invites you to take your first rest before descending through the forest into the Großer Buchwaldgraben. After crossing a stream, it accompanies the path for a bit before the circular route ascends the slope toward Rauenthal. Before the village, however, the path again runs parallel to the slope before rising again in the forest and the first vineyards appear. In a quick alternation of forest, vineyards, and meadows, you finally reach the Bubenhäuser Höhe – one of the highlights of the route. Relaxing from the forest swing, the view extends far over the Rhine valley - under favorable conditions as far as the Melibokus on the Bergstraße, the Donnersberg in the West Palatinate, and across to the Nahe hill country. Just as varied, the route continues to Rauenthal. The small wine village invites you to stop at some wineries and taverns, and you shouldn’t miss the chance to try the delicious wines and regional specialties. After the refreshment, the route returns above the Großer Buchwaldgraben, alternating between forest and forest edges back to the starting point.
