Regionalpark Rhein Main - Upper Rheingau route

Since the 1960s, there has been extensive and largely unregulated sand and gravel extraction in many places on the Main plain – with significant consequences for the landscape. From the effort to reclaim the area, the Regionalpark emerged. New uses of the gravel pits have made a large area accessible and newly experienceable again. An example is the extensive area of the Hochheim playground.

Besides areas for recreation, new habitats for plants and animals have been created. In the Weilbacher Kiesgruben, you can observe the unusual landscape secondhand via viewpoints and laid paths. Numerous pieces of information on backgrounds and experience offers are available at the visitor center of the Regionalpark Portal Weilbacher Kiesgruben and the adjacent nature conservation house. The inn Zum wilden Esel provides culinary refreshment.

The contrast between an idyllic landscape and the impact of an industrial region is particularly drastic in the Flörsheimer Schweiz. Through this old cultural landscape ran the Kasteler Landwehr, a medieval defensive system consisting of a densely thorny embankment with ditch. The reconstruction of a historic watchtower, the Flörsheimer Warte, is a popular rest stop with wine atmosphere. Typical for the route are avenues with a wide variety of tree species, including service tree, cherry, oak, and maple. Especially noteworthy is the Wasserwerksallee near Hattersheim with its old lindens and historic cobblestones. A magnolia avenue leads in the immediate vicinity past the Rosarium Hattersheim, which commemorates the city’s over hundred-year-old rose breeding tradition. It is a route that prompts reflection with changing perspectives on the landscape.

1. The ROUTE START is at Hattersheim station: On the south side, a sign immediately points left to the Regionalpark round route. After crossing the Schwarzbach to the right: The round route signs and the typical red triangles accompany you until just before Hochheim, initially to the Rosarium Hattersheim.

2. ROSARIUM: After the visit, continue straight ahead and on the cobblestone-paved Wasserwerksallee left to the nut-tree quarter with the main direction Regionalpark Portal Weilbach.

3. The Regionalpark Portal Weilbacher Kiesgruben: The ROUND ROUTE meanders through the area designed with greenery and water and past the lookout tower. The poet’s house is soon reached – next big goal: The iron tree. Landscape and paths are varied, sometimes paved, sometimes rougher.

4. A GRAVEL PATH leads left up to the A3 viewing platform. After the visit, it goes over the motorway to Bad Weilbach park. The following section leads past stone sculptures, a vine-covered walkway, and the Flörsheimer Warte, and tempts with beautiful views over the Main. Up and down you go through the Flörsheimer Schweiz, and soon the iron tree peeks over the ridge.

5. At St. Anna chapel, signs point left to the IRON TREE. Then back and – pushing – down to the meadows mill. On the Landwehrweg, initially a plank path, you next set sights on the Hochheim playground and always follow the red triangles. Caution when crossing country roads. The route leads straight past the playground, then attention is needed:

6. Here you leave the REGIONALPARK ROUND ROUTE, which leads sharply right to the Fänchens cross. Your path, however, leads right over a small bridge to the Main riverside path and to Hochheim. That is soon reached across the motorway. After two roundabouts, you drive on Königsberger Ring – caution: shortly before the end slant left, then right into Wiesbadener Straße and with the Regionalpark triangle to the Main riverside path: on the town outskirts to the church St. Peter and Paul, then sharply right down to the station, through the underpass to the Main cycle path. It runs almost continuously on the bank. You ride left.

7. After about 15.5 km, it turns off the Main at the SCHWARZBACH. Shortly after at a small bridge, the Main cycle path leads right, you go straight on and follow the signs to Hattersheim S-Bahn station.
