Riesling Loop Flörsheim Switzerland

Before the path turns off to the Wickerbach floodplain, a detour to the Weidenmühle winery is worthwhile. An idyllic property surrounded by wooded meadows.

The mild climate and extensive use of land through sheep grazing have established a special habitat type: the dry meadow. With its variety of important plant and animal species, it belongs to the most species-rich in Central Europe. The iron tree, both a viewing tower and art installation, offers wide views and enchants with natural sounds. Behind the St. Anna Chapel and the Wiesenmühle, the path meets the Wickerbach, which gently gurgles through the floodplain and meadow landscape. At the lime kilns, the route swings north. Once back on the "peak", a stop at the Flörsheim Watchtower is recommended.

The historic lime kilns from the 18th century belonged to a local brickworks. Until 1921, the kilns were fired, burning the quarried limestone and providing the basis for the light plaster of many Flörsheim houses.

Once, the Wickerbach was lined with 20 mills along its course to the Main confluence at Flörsheim. Most mills ground grain; occasionally, oilseeds were crushed and flax was broken.

The Flörsheim Watchtower in the Wicker vineyards was originally one of four watchtowers along the "Kasteler Landwehr". The archbishops of Mainz had the structure built in the 15th century to defend their right-bank possessions.
