“On foot on the Via Mattiacorum”

People leave traces and the hiking trail “Via Mattiacorum” follows these back into the Roman-Germanic history of the first and second centuries AD. From the hot springs in Wiesbaden (Aquae Mattiacorum) over the heights of the Taunus to the UNESCO World Heritage Limes, the path leads to the residential and half-timbered town of Idstein.

The course through the Taunus landscape surprises with an experience-worthy symbiosis of nature and culture: half-timbered buildings and Taunus heights, colorful mixed forests and blooming meadows, the World Heritage Limes and Jagdschloss Platte, views of Feldberg and the Rhine plain, the Neroberg with funicular railway and the Nerotal with its villas at the historic park – the highlights of the landscape and also of more recent history line up like pearls on a string.

Starting in Wiesbaden

From Wiesbaden, the start point at the "Kriegerdenkmal" is easily accessible by public transport (bus line 1 from Wiesbaden station). The start in Wiesbaden, with about 380 meters of ascent to Jagdschloss, is the sporty option. The path leads through Nerotal park out of the city and through woodland and fields to the World Heritage Limes. The destination Idstein offers gastronomy, accommodation, and very good connections to bus and train for relaxation.

Starting in Idstein

Starting at Idstein station, the route has an easy character. Through the varied low mountain landscape, one soon reaches the Limes and from Jagdschloss Platte the path leads steadily downhill into Nerotal park.

Start in Wiesbaden: free parking at the end of Neropark at the foot of the Nerobergbahn. This shortens the route slightly because the Neropark is omitted.

Start in Idstein: In the vicinity of the station, parking is partially subject to charges.
