In the 15th century, Flörsheimer Warte, a former watchtower, was part of the Kasteler Landwehr, a defensive system which the Archdiocese of Mainz had built to protect its property on the right bank of the Rhine. Following dissolution (1803), the Landwehr lost its importance, as there was nothing left to defend due to the lack of assets. Flörsheimer Warte soon fell into disrepair. In 1996, a reconstruction was built next to the ruins of the medieval fortified tower, based on historical records. From here, there are stunning panoramic views in all four directions, over Rheingau and Taunus, to the Frankfurt skyline. The popular ‘Flörsheimer Warte’ restaurant, beer garden and weekend winter lounge serve speciality cheeses (Spundekäs and Handkäs) and salad, accompanied by the finest wines from the vineyards in Wicker and Hochheim.
